Presiden RI Joko Widodo (Jokowi) menggelar pertemuan bilateral dengan Perdana Menteri (PM) Papua Nugini (PNG), James Marape, di Ruang Kakatua, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, Kamis (07/09). Pertemuan tersebut digelar di sela-sela pelaksanaan rangkaian Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi (KTT) ke-43 ASEAN.
Presiden Joko Widodo menyampaikan penghargaannya atas dukungan Papua Nugini terhadap kedaulatan dan integritas Indonesia. Dukungan itu ditunjukkan juga pada saat KTT Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) yang digelar di Port Vila, Vanuatu, 23-24 Agustus 2023 lalu.
“Saya sangat hargai dukungan Papua Nugini terhadap kedaulatan dan integritas Indonesia, termasuk yang ditunjukkan pada KTT MSG bulan lalu,” ujar Presiden dikutip laman Setkab.
Selain itu, Presiden Jokowi juga menyambut baik bergeliatnya kembali aktivitas perekonomian di perbatasan Indonesia-PNG seiring dibukanya perbatasan Skouw-Wutung, serta peluncuran penerbangan langsung Port Moresby-Denpasar.
Sementara itu, PM Marape dalam sambutannya menyampaikan ucapan selamat atas kesuksesan Indonesia dalam keketuaan dan penyelenggaraan KTT ASEAN. PM Marape juga menyatakan dukungannya terhadap Indonesia sebagai tetangga dekat PNG.
“Saya juga ingin mengucapkan selamat kepada Anda atas keberhasilan pertemuan ASEAN yang Anda selenggarakan. Di belakang APEC dan di belakang G20, sekarang ASEAN, Papua Nugini mendukung Anda. Sangat bangga dengan tetangga terdekat kita,” ujar PM Marape.
Dalam KTT MSG yang dihadiri delegasi Indonesia sebagai associated member, para pemimpin kawasan Melanesia menegaskan kembali pengakuan terhadap kedaulatan Indonesia atas Papua, seperti tertulis dalam komunike bersama yang dirilis pasca pertemuan.
"Para pemimpin menegaskan kembali kedaulatan Indonesia atas Papua," demikian dokumen itu, dilansir CNN Indonesia.
Pertemuan yang dihadiri antara lain oleh Vanuatu, Fiji, Kepulauan Solomon, dan Papua Nugini itu sempat mengundang perhatian ketika delegasi Indonesia melakukan walk out ketika pemimpin separatis Persatuan Pembebasan Gerakan Papua Barat (ULMWP) Benny Wenda akan berpidato.

On the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (09/07) held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) James Marape.
President Joko Widodo expressed his appreciation for Papua New Guinea's support for Indonesia's sovereignty and integrity. This support was also shown during the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Summit held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, August 23-24, 2023.
"I greatly appreciate Papua New Guinea's support for Indonesia's sovereignty and integrity, including the support demonstrated at last month's MSG summit," the President said according to Secretariat Cabinet page.
President Joko Widodo also lauded the increase in economic activities between the two countries following the inauguration of Skouw (Indonesia)-Wutung (PNG) border and opening of direct flights from the PNG’s capital Port Moresby to Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia.
Meanwhile, PM Marape in his speech congratulated Indonesia's success in chairing and organizing the ASEAN Summit. Mr Marape also expressed his support for Indonesia as PNG's close neighbour.
"I would also like to congratulate you on the success of the ASEAN meeting you held. Behind APEC and behind the G20, now ASEAN, Papua New Guinea has your back. Very proud of our closest neighbours," Mr Marape said.
At the MSG Summit which was attended by the Indonesian delegation as associated members, the leaders of the Melanesian region reaffirmed the recognition of Indonesia's sovereignty over Papua, as written in the joint communiqué released after the meeting.
"The leaders reaffirmed Indonesia's sovereignty over Papua," said the document, reported by CNN Indonesia.
The meeting, which was attended by Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, attracted attention when the Indonesian delegation walked out when the leader of the separatist United Liberation Movement of West Papua (ULMWP) Benny Wenda gave his speech.
